Prof. Teodora Georgieva commented on the reasons for Bulgaria’s ranking as a “modest innovator” in Europe according to the European Innovation Scoreboard. The country remains at the bottom of the ranking among EU member states, along with Romania, but made progress with the 36th place out of 127 countries in the 2017 World Innovation Index of Cornell University, INSEAD and the World Intellectual Property Organization. In a report dedicated to global competitiveness, Bulgaria makes progress from 4th position to 50th place among 138 countries.
“The results of the three studies, not only in Europe but also globally, are actually the richest countries. In this respect, Bulgaria is a good exception in the Global Innovation Index. The country falls in the group of countries with a medium to high per capita income. Within this group we show the best indicators after China,” Georgieva pointed out.
She stressed the importance of national policies to support the development of an innovation-based economy and called for increased public investment.
