In the period 29 – 30 June 2023, ARC Fund and Sofia Development Association organized a policy-learning workshop on the topic “Transformative visions for territorial development”, within the project Leveraging Leadership for Responsible Research and Innovation in Territories, funded by Horizon 2020 program. Integration of responsible research and innovation in territorial policymaking was in the focus of the discussions among experts from Switzerland, Denmark, Spain, Greece and Bulgaria, Norway, Belgium and Germany. Representatives of the municipalities of Sofia (Bulgaria), Sabadell (Spain) and Thalwil (Switzerland), as well as of the region of Western Macedonia (Greece) shared the experience they have gathered over the past two years in applying the principles of responsible research and innovation in the fields of energy transition, sustainable urban development, digital transition, active ageing, support for innovation, youth employment and entrepreneurship. Workshop participants concluded that learning among territories continues to be very important, and that the principles of responsible research and innovation are very relevant to territorial governance. If applied properly, these principles can ensure that policymakers and other stakeholders act in a responsible and diligent manner today, so as to attain a positive and beneficial impact tomorrow.
