On 15 October 2011, U4Energy Award Ceremony was held at the Sheraton Hotel in Sofia for the regional winners of the first pan-European school competition on energy efficiency, launched by the EU Commissioner for Energy Mr Oettinger in 2010. The competition is carried out by European Schoolnet on behalf of the European Commission and aims to promote the exiting new field of “energy education”. After a successful first year with hundreds of schools from nearly 30 countries submitting entries, U4Energy Regional Awards Ceremony took place in Sofia to recognize the winning projects from Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia.
The audience was greeted by Mr. Delyan Dobrev, Deputy Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism, and Mr. Petar Natsev, Head of the Information and Communications Department at EC Representation in Bulgaria. Trophies and certificates were handed also by Vanya Kastreva – Head of the Regional Inspectorate on Education – Sofia, Kolyo Kolev – Еxecutive Director of the State Agency for Energy Efficiency, Liyana Adjarova – Executive Director of the Association of Bulgarian Energy Agencies, representatives of other state and private organizations. Teachers and pupils from nine schools in Sofia attended the ceremony as well.
In front of more than 100 guests, teachers and students were awarded in three competition categories: “Best energy efficiency measures”, “Best teaching actions on efficient energy use”, and “Best school campaign on energy efficiency”. Primary School “M. Lakatnik” from Burgas and Primary School “L. Karavelov” from Nova Zagora were the Bulgarian winners of the competition. The winners of the regional ceremonies will have the chance to become Europe’s Energy Champions and win a trip to Brussels.
